“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain
Introduction:
One issue for many people who go from employee to entrepreneur is taking their old mindset with them. But if you want to be a successful entrepreneur, you must think like one. That means the buck stops with you, and if no one else is around to do it, get ready to roll your shirtsleeves up and get dirty. But it goes further than that.
With that said, here are 9 things you need to know as an entrepreneur! 👊
You’re not in charge of them, and they’re not in charge of you. You only need to be concerned about deliverables and not how you do it, and they only need to be concerned with being happy with what they get from you, not how you do it.
Don’t stop doing your work if you can keep doing it, or until you have enough money to support yourself for six to eight months (if not longer). Do the work to project what you will need, and you’ll be able to get this set easier.
Depending on where you live, this may be hard or simple. If you’re in the USA, don’t listen to anyone telling you how it works. Instead, seek out the insurance for yourself by calling the insurance company or checking on healthcare.gov, or let the folks at Health Sherpa help you. (https://www.healthsherpa.com/)
It’s fine to dream and even have “pie in the sky” ideas, but if you don’t do the work to achieve the dream, your expectations are off. Only expect results from the work you put in using the right data.
Once you know what you want to do and the work you’ll perform, set up a realistic schedule based on how your life works. For example, if you have kids at home, don’t try to shove ten hours of work into their two-hour nap time. Get real about how this will work, whether that means you hire a mommy’s helper or that you work all night, depending on your unique situation.
You have to be ready to do the work you don’t like doing, at least until you can afford to outsource. Even then, sometimes things go wrong, and you need to do it yourself.
Keep your confidence up by understanding the type of value you bring to your customers and the world through your offers.
It’s not always easy being an entrepreneur. Sometimes you have to make difficult choices, and sometimes things just go wrong.
Be ready to use the data you collect about your industry, your business, your website, and so forth. Your gut instincts only go so far, so always back them up with data.
Thinking like an entrepreneur is a very subtle thing compared to thinking like an employee. It’s all up to you to set your schedule, decide what is essential to work on, and the process to do the tasks. Everything about your day is all about what you want to do, based on your research and the needs of your customers.
Here is a quick checklist to get you started on your marketing below. Remember imperfect action beats inaction, get started and keep leading.
Identify an audience by creating a few avatars of what your ideal clients and customers look like. In other words, who would you be excited to work with every day, 7 days a week?
